[livejournal.com profile] bookelfe gave me: a comedy about SPACE DETECTIVES, traveling the stars to solve crime!

TYPE:
Hour-long space dramedy of the type that would be canceled by Fox after thirteen episodes after the first tantalizing glimpses at an overarching plot!

RATING:
TV-MA

OPENING CREDITS SONG:
The bit that goes between the chorus and the following verse in "Rocky Took A Lover," by Bell X1

END CREDITS SONG:
Starlight, by Muse. Either that or Boom De Ya Da, from the Discovery Channel video.

SYNOPSIS:

Wellery Sanson has a gift with numbers, figures, and organization in general. As well she should, being a former archivist. But ever since she set her eyes on freelance crime-solving, her skills have been put to a somewhat...different use.

Like keeping her partner (and pilot), Carlin Reilly, in check. Wells knows she can't complain too much, since the Wanderlust is technically in Carlin's name, but when Carlin gets all the whims and Wells gets all the bills, it's hard not too.

And their crew of fellow crimesolvers isn't much help in that department. Jamison Keefe, Public Relations, can get along with anyone except the people he has to live with. Clara Nagato, Secondary Pilot and Primary Navigator, is still bitter about not making the cut for a Galactic Survey Mission and tends to spend her free time cataloging every single star they pass. Yancey Soeur, Software Specialist, won't stop trying to program the ship's computer into an AI when it still can't quite parse verbal commands...and only succeeds in getting it to curse like a sailor. Clancy Cienfuegos, Hardware Specialist, who Wells is convinced is going to murder Yancey in his sleep someday just so people will stop calling him Yancey. Rebekah Cienfuegos, Networker and Hacker, has the distinction of being possibly the only person on the ship that Wells actually gets along with. Robert Barker, The Muscle, writes songs and poetry about scientific concepts. And last but not least, Lourdes Ghose, who gave up a job as a Federal Investigator on Yemaya to go freelance for reasons that Wells still doesn't quite understand...

OPENING VOICEOVER:

[Wells, to magnificent, awe-inspiring background music:] The universe is larger than the human brain can possibly conceive. Over the years humanity has broken the light barrier, terraformed planets we couldn't even see a few centuries ago, seen skies and double-sunsets that no living creature has ever seen before...

...and yet some bastards just keep on stealing.

[Aaaand the background-music becomes somewhat more wacky/caper-y.] Once you go interplanetary, jurisdiction gets hard to define - and that's where we come in. Not quite bounty hunters, not quite private detectives, we fall into the gray area between the stellar systems.

We may not be the best - hell, we may not even be sane - but one thing's for sure: if we're after you, you'd better watch your back.

CAST OF CHARACTERS:

Wellery Sanson, The One Sane Person:

[Cush Jumbo]

Wells is, at heart, an idealist; she just wants to be free. Instead she gets to be the designated adult on the Wanderlust, dealing with such boring realities as paperwork, taxes, and, you know, food. She wants a carefree, adventurous life, after having given up a considerably more stable job as an archivist (read: librarian), and halfway gets it. Although the crime-solving life doesn't quite click for her, since she can't quite divorce the crime from the context and will never master the art of the quippy one-liner while standing over the body - there's a person who's dead, for christ's sake! Have some respect! - seeing the seedy (and often wacky) underbelly of the universe is cultivating a sense of justice in her.

Carlin Reilly, Pilot and Owner of the Wanderlust:

[Carrie Mulligan]

Carlin is, in many ways, a spoiled rich girl. Her parents bought her the Wanderlust after she completed Basic Training and served out her time in the Hestian Reserve Pilot Corps, mostly flying charitable donations of medical supplies from backwater moon to backwater moon. Her parents don't entirely approve of her devil-may-care attitude, but since she's the youngest-but-one and tends to keep her antics out of the press, they don't really care. She's not a particularly spectacular pilot, but she loves what she does, at least, and she hasn't crashed the ship...yet. She tends not to be as involved in the actual crime-solving aspects of their lives, and while the rest of the crew are planetside doing interrogations she tends to stay on the ship, doing...well, nobody's quite sure, but as long as they don't see the effects they don't mind.

Jamison Keefe, Public Relations:

[Aldis Hodge]

A ship like the Wanderlust is not, by any means, where Jamison particularly wants to be. He's somewhat old-fashioned, a deep believer in oratory and effective communication in an age of instant vid messaging and thoughtless comments. Also, there are very few things to do with a Masters in Communication that isn't coupled with any coding experience, and he has no interest in politics. He's damn good at what he does, which usually involves lying like a bastard and pretending to like people he really hates, and he just can't muster the energy to bother with the rest of the crew. He's the one who talks to the authorities, who weasels out official details that shouldn't be public, and manages the clients.

Clara Nagato, Secondary Pilot and Primary Navigator:

[Naoko Mori!]

Clara also doesn't particularly want to be aboard the Wanderlust. It's nothing personal for her, but she's just had a lifelong ambition to be on a Galactic Survey ship...and she didn't even get an interview. She's a master pilot, though, and her navigation skills are pretty damn impressive, seeing as she's just the tiniest bit obsessed. It's not that she doesn't like the rest of the crew, it's just that she's ridiculously overqualified for this job and maybe the tiniest bit high-maintenance.

Yancey Soeur, Software Specialist:

[Daniel Anthony]

As far as he's concerned, Yancey has the best damn job in the universe. He's convinced he's got a diamond in the rough with the ship's computer, and spends a slightly disturbing amount of his free time "upgrading" it, with mixed results. By far the youngest of the crew, Yancey is naive, laid-back, and almost disgustingly good-natured sometimes. Due to the way their names rhyme (he needs no further justification, but, yeah, okay, it might have something to do with Yancey being the third of four brothers, who he misses pretty badly), Yancey looks up at Clancy as a big brother.

Clancy Cienfuegos, Hardware:

[Santiago Cabrera]

Clancy has a knack with machines, and loves taking them apart and putting them back together better. He also loves his wife, Rebekah, and being able to see the stars. He does not love Yancey, who he finds annoying as hell. Clancy is on the Wanderlust pretty much because Rebekah really liked it. It's not that he's whipped, just that he finds most things to be less important than Rebekah's happiness. SPOILER ALERT: They get a fucking happy ending. Suck on that, Joss Whedon!

Rebekah Cienfuegos, Networker and Hacker:

[Kristen Bell]

Rebekah's the one who keeps all the mechanical parts of the ship talking to each other, and also hacks the hell out of whatever system is necessary for the job at hand. She enjoys smiling, sexing up her sexy husband, and being almost-but-not-quite as sane as Wells. When she's got nothing better to do, she can be found cooking notably mediocre food in the kitchen module of the ship and generally going about her duties with a smile on her face. Except when you get on her bad side - then all of a sudden your shower doesn't work, your toilet doesn't flush, and you can't access any of your financial information...

Robert Barker:

[Enver Gjokaj]

Robert's job is to be strong, punch people, and occasionally shoot them if he has to. Despite his natural inclination towards poetry and science, Robert became the muscle after he discovered that it pays better than poetry reading at coffee shops. He has no temper to speak of, and tends to keep to himself, although a little bit of that universal social lubricant (by which I mean Clancy's engine-room rotgut) makes him more outgoing and gregarious than just about anyone else on the crew. Don't mistake his silence for slowness; he knows the weight of words and their importance, and would rather risk an awkward silence than a thoughtless comment. He and Jamison end up stoically bonding, while he and Clara hit it off after bonding over the majesty of space.

Lourdes Ghose:

[Indira Varma]

Lourdes left a cushy job as a Federal Investigator on Yemaya to join the crew of the Wanderlust, for reasons which nobody quite understands. She's got a keen eye for detail, a scarily good memory, and years of experience, and tends to do most of the detective gruntwork like slogging through hours of surveillance footage. She is freaking addicted to coffee, and can usually be found brewing a new pot in the kitchen-module. She's always willing to chat but almost never to actually talk, and is not particularly forthcoming with things like personal details. And then there's the matter of her last case on Yemaya, the only one she left unsolved...
