starsandatoms: ([torchwood] Tosh and Ianto)

Dear Torchwood,

We had a good run of it. We'll always have Suzie, and Welsh cannibals, and Tosh's latent lesbianism, not to mention all of the wonderful cracky times of season two. But I've been thinking about this for a while, and, well.

I think it's time we went our separate ways.

I know you're excited about your new direction, and I'm happy for you, I really am. But when I first saw you, I thought that it would just be the two of us and alien-hunting in Cardiff. And though we had our rocky points early on with the Cyberwoman, I really thought we were going somewhere good once you stopped taking yourself seriously and embraced the fact that you could be funny and serious. And that was what I liked about you - that even though sometimes you could go to dark places, you were always coming from a genuine place, and you never hesitated to have little old ladies scoffing at Torchwood.

It's just - for a while you were so fun, and so interesting, and even in your weaker points I could look at the characters I loved and I could care.

But things are different now. You've changed. And maybe I've changed, too, but I don't want to watch a show about how horrible human beings are and how futile life is. That was never what it was about for me. It was about how horrible things happen, and funny things happen, and sometimes alien car-stealing blowfish happen. It wasn't about Jack murdering his own grandson, or watching three-fifths of the cast die horribly within five episodes. It wasn't about seeing how dark and edgy you could be just for the sake of being dark and edgy.

I miss laughing with you. I've cried with you, and at first it was worth it, but now it seems like the only emotion you think is worth evoking is sadness, or disgust, and that's not what I signed up for.

So I'm sorry, but I think we should go our separate ways. Maybe we'll see each other now and then, if there's nothing else to download on a slow weekend or if there's a guest star that I particularly enjoy, but you burnt me out. I trusted you to do what was right for the story, and you got so wrapped up in your own depth that you forgot what you were really about: CSI Cardiff, and the intersection of normal lives and the alien.

I wish you the best,
Me.
